Background: Autonomous fork-lifts and AGVs (automated guided vehicles) have become a standard part of everyday business. But they need to be smarter. An AGV will stop if it is about to hit an obstacle – but once it has stopped, it has no way to solve the problem itself, e.g. taking an alternative route.

Our customers want faster and better logistic solutions. They do not want the AGVs to be standing still waiting for a human operator to come and solve the issue. The vehicle needs to be smarter and solve more problems autonomously to operate more efficiently.

When working on your Master Thesis at Toyota, you will:

  • Work hands-on with our autonomous vehicles
  • Analyze sensor data
  • Define and implement algorithms that will support the vehicle to take smart decisions and solve problems, based on sensor data

You will first create an understanding of available sensors and then move on to implementing and verifying a solution in our lab, using an existing autonomous vehicle. The goal is to enable the vehicle to identify obstacles and re-plan the route accordingly.

Distance work

Normally, master thesis work is located at our Mjölby site. This year’s thesis work will unfortunately be done remotely, due to the Covid-19 constraints. Meetings will be set up using Teams. The constraints can be subject to change with short notice, depending on how the Covid-19 situation evolves. However, some part of the work will need to take place on-site in our lab - of course with relevant distancing and other necessary precautions.

  • Master of Science in Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering (Y)
  • Master of Science in Computer Science (D)
  • Master of Science in Electronics Design (ED)
